COMMUNITY STORIES: IMAN JERVEY

I always knew that I would want to go to college out of state. In 2019 I received my full academic scholarship from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. I was very eager and excited because it would be my first time living away from home.

Though my plan was always to go to mortuary school first, being able to attend college debt free was an opportunity that I would not let pass by.

Well, I was one of them!

It can be seen that this is an overwhelming field to pursue. However, growing up I realized that this is an opportunity to use my gift to help families at one of their lowest points in life.

Being here for these past four years and approaching graduation this May I am appreciative of  the support from faculty who not only looked like me but wanted to see me succeed as well.

There have been multiple organizations that I have been involved in that contributed to my success

I have been put in a position to excel personally, academically, and professionally to know how to market, negotiate, and be a critical thinker.

I facilitate, organize, and lead out the task to make sure that every manager is equipped to be successful in their position.

What drew me to the position is the opportunity to first be apart of the first HBCU partnership of Student-Made.

It is an honor to be apart of history in the continuous development of Student-Made to see spaces of innovation, and entrepreneurship in it’s full capacity.

We want to provide the creators opportunities to develop their businesses, and for their managers to grow the necessary skills that will help them here in their matriculation at Benedict College as well as in their post graduate endeavors.

We are looking to grow our events catered to the creator’s specific business whether it be through art, custom jewelry, digital commissions, or photography. The creator’s success and their opportunity to fully maximize their potential from Student-Made is what motivates me to improve.

I am looking forward to the rest of our journey of Student-Made this semester. This experience has been very instrumental in me learning how to be a better listener, and networking with people I would of never crossed paths with without Student-Made.

This experience as a whole will be able to benefit my future endeavors by adding experience to my resume and being able to connect with innovators to enhance my career, and expertise in life as whole.

What I hope to take away from the Student-Made community is to truly understand the power of unity, and how it can foster greatness.

My future vision for Student-Made is for this great organization to grow to partner with more HBCU’s and eventually have established partnerships to teach the youth on the importance on ownership, and the mindset to be innovative, proactive, and strategic risk-takers.

Submit the form in your Resource Portal to let us know your interest in sharing your journey with our Student-Made community— whether you’re a Creator or Manager! We’ll be in touch with you soon about helping you craft your inspiring story.
